Do I need a battery with solar?

Sometimes no. But the reason most people ask is that their bill did not move after they went solar, and storage is usually the missing piece rather than a luxury add-on.

The short version.

You produce and spend at different times

Panels work midday. Your bill is built morning and evening. Those windows barely overlap.

Storage keeps the power yours

What you make at noon is still yours at seven, instead of sold cheap and bought back dear.

It is also the only way to stay on

Panels alone shut down in an outage. A battery is what keeps the lights on.

Why panels alone underdeliver

This is mechanical, not a sales argument. It happens to almost everyone.

Your roof produces its most between roughly ten in the morning and five in the afternoon. Your house spends the most between about eight and ten in the morning, and again from five to nine at night. On a normal weekday you are generating while nobody is home and buying while everybody is.

The midday power does not vanish — it goes out to the grid and you get credited for it. Just not at the price you pay to buy power back that evening. Mike explains it with cookies, because the arithmetic lands better that way. You bake four, your utility takes them, and hands you back one.

So the honest way to put the question is not whether you need a battery. It is who you want doing the storing. Somebody is storing that power either way.

When the answer is no

There are real cases where storage does not earn its place, and we will tell you if yours is one.

If somebody is home all day using power as it is produced, a large share of your generation is already going straight into the house, and storage has less work to do. If your plan credits exported power generously, the gap it closes is smaller. And if you are moving in two years, the arithmetic changes shape entirely.

None of that is knowable from a web page, which is why we look at your actual usage rather than quoting a rule of thumb. A recommendation that arrives before anyone has seen your bill is not a recommendation.

What a battery actually changes

Four things, in the order people tend to care about them.

During an outage a system with storage can run independently of the grid. Without it, sunshine on the roof does you no good at all.

The expensive hours get cheaper

You cover the evening from what you made at midday, instead of buying it back at the rate that built your bill in the first place.

A payment that ends

A power bill climbs for as long as you own the house. Equipment is a payment that stops. Over the years you stay, that difference compounds quietly.

You stop being a price taker

The rate you are credited for exports can change. Power you kept is not subject to anybody's revision.

Common questions

Do I need a battery with solar panels?

Not always, but more often than people are told. Panels produce in the middle of the day while most homes spend the most in the morning and evening, so without storage you export power cheaply and buy it back at a higher rate. Storage closes that gap and is also the only way the house keeps running during an outage.

Can I add a battery to solar panels I already have?

Yes. Adding storage to an existing system is ordinary work. The question Mike asks is whether, knowing what you know now, you would have added it on day one. If the answer is yes, that decision is still open to you.

Will a battery pay for itself?

That depends on your usage pattern, what your plan credits for exported power, and what an outage costs your household. We work it through with your actual numbers on the review rather than offering a figure we cannot stand behind.

Do solar panels work in a power outage without a battery?

No. A grid-tied system disconnects when the grid goes down, for the safety of the crews working on the lines. The panels stop supplying the house even in full sun. Storage is what allows the system to keep running.
